Adaptations
Structural Adaptation
The Peaceful Dove has a distinctive long, sturdy tail which is shown in the picture to the right. Their tail helps manoeuvre close to the ground and around trees. This makes it much easier to escape from predators. Without this distinctive tail they would be much more vulnerable to predators having a much less chance of surviving in the wild.
Behavioral Adaptation
Peaceful Doves' drink by sucking water, using their beaks like straws. Most birds sip water and then throw their head back to swallow which is inefficient and takes much longer than the Peaceful Doves'. Having a quicker way to drink reduces the risk of being caught off guard by their predators. Without this adaptation the Peaceful Dove would struggle to get a proper drink quickly.
Habitat
Peaceful Doves are found in open dry woodland with a grassy understorey and the edges of woodlands or forest living in Eastern and Northern Australia. As you can see in the zoo enclosure, there are lots of small trees, replicating an edge of woodland. The Peaceful Doves are perching on a small tree in the natural habitat photo.
